Project Updates

Project overview

  • CLTWater conducted hydraulic modeling for the Mallard Creek Basin, which indicated that it is currently at capacity. Future population and flow projections also suggest that flows in the basin would likely grow about 20 percent every 10 years. In addition to confirming capacity limitation, flow monitoring showed areas with high rates of inflow and infiltration.
  • With a goal to reduce excessive system flows and increase sewer capacity to keep up with the rapidly developing community, CLTWater has partnered with Stantec (engineering) and R.H. Price (construction) to enhance the wastewater system in the Mallard Creek Basin service area.
  • The Project Area is mainly residential, with increasing commercial development around the new LYNX Blue Line, UNC Charlotte and University Research Park.
  • The projected work of Construction Phases I and II includes installing 36,000 linear feet of gravity sewer. Work will include rehabilitation construction and sewer construction, which are associated with manholes, stream crossings and trenchless construction methods for road crossings.
  • The Mallard Creek Interceptor Improvement Project team will work in close coordination with both the Mallard Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) and the project teams for Cross Charlotte Trail Segment 10 (Mallard Creek Church Road to Pavilion) and Cross Charlotte Trail Segment 11 (Pavilion Boulevard to Kempsford Drive) throughout the project.

Estimated Schedule

  • Design Phase I: Complete
  • Design Phase II: Ongoing (Estimated completion mid-2026)
  • Construction Phase I: 2025 – 2029
  • Construction Phase II: TBD

Project goals

To enhance the wastewater system in the Mallard Creek Basin service area by constructing a new sanitary sewer to reduce excessive system flows and increase sewer capacity to keep up with the rapidly developing community.

What to Expect:

During Construction Phase

  • Authorized representatives on behalf of CLTWater will be working on or near properties on one or more occasions. All field crew are instructed to wear identifying clothing (i.e., the company’s logo) to identify themselves. A list of entities involved with this project includes:
    • CLTWater
    • RH Price
    • Stantec
    • City of Charlotte (XCLT)
  • Staging of traffic control devices, safety equipment and large digging equipment in anticipation of water main construction.
  • Soft digging to locate underground utilities.
  • Clearing of trees, shrubs, bushes etc. within the construction easement area.
  • Pipe will be delivered and stored within the construction easements.
  • Construction activity including digging, boring and blasting work as needed with accompanying equipment and machinery.
  • Traffic impacts may include possible road and lane closures. Traffic signage, flagging and detour routes may be necessary during construction. Public and local road access will be maintained when possible.

Map of Work Area:

The Mallard Creek Wastewater Improvement Project is a multi-phase sewer improvement project that will extend from Mallard Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), follow Mallard Creek upstream across the basin and end at the West Mallard Branch. Phase I will extend from the Mallard WRF to the west side of North Tryon Street. Phase II will extend from North Tryon Street to Mallard Creek Road.
