When it rains - it drains! The storm drainage system is a large network of structures, ditches, underground pipes and streams that carry rainwater through our community. As Charlotte has grown, so has the storm drainage system. Public and private storm drainage systems connect across the City. There are more than 150,000 storm drains, 3,800 miles of underground pipes and 2,400 miles of open drainage ditches and streams.
