Volunteer with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control is a busy, high-intake shelter serving the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Every day, countless animals and community members come through our doors, and we remain committed to providing the highest level of care and service possible — but we cannot do it without the help of our volunteers.

Volunteers play a critical role in helping improve the lives of shelter pets through enrichment, socialization, community outreach, adoption support, and daily shelter operations. We welcome volunteers ages 16 and older to join us in making a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and our community.

Volunteer Opportunities

Lobby Attendant & Animal Interaction

Assist front counter staff by retrieving animals from adoption kennels for citizen introductions and adoption meet-and-greets. Volunteers also help provide general pet owner education and assist visitors searching for lost pets.

Exercising & Socializing Animals

Dogs, cats, and small animals spend extended periods in kennels and cages. Walks, enrichment, side-yard runs, toy play, and positive interactions help provide physical exercise and trust-building socialization.

Laundry Assistance

Help staff by washing, drying, and folding laundry used throughout the shelter daily.

Off-Site Adoption Events

Volunteers assist with event setup, animal preparation, supply organization, public education, animal showcases, adoption paperwork support, and community engagement at events across Mecklenburg County.

Rabies Vaccination & Microchip Clinics

Volunteer support is needed during vaccination and microchip clinics, including paperwork assistance, crowd control, and line management.

Weekday Spay & Neuter Clinics

Assist veterinary staff with patient check-in, surgery recovery monitoring, crowd control, and surgical pack preparation.

Pictures, Videos & Bios

Help create photos, videos, and pet biographies to market adoptable animals and help them find homes faster.

Kennel Cleaning

Support daily shelter operations through kennel and cage cleaning, dish washing, toy sanitization, and general organization assistance.

Tag Team

Assist with creating free pet ID tags both at the shelter and during community events. Volunteers are trained on the equipment and process.

Microchip Checkpoint Booths

Volunteers attend community events to scan pets for microchips and assist owners with maintaining accurate registration information in local and national databases.
