Stormwater Design Manual

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is in the process of updating the Stormwater Design Manual. The manual provides technical and engineering procedures to assist in the design and evaluation of stormwater management facilities in the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

The proposed changes to the manual are intended to:

  • Align the manual with City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County land development standards;
  • Match current requirements, regulations and accepted industry best practices;
  • Reduce lengthy explanations of common engineering topics; and
  • Improve the practical use and aesthetic appeal including better searchability, updated tables and graphics and digital accessibility.

Public Review and Comment Period Now Open (April 1 – 30)

The updated draft Stormwater Design Manual is now available for public review and comment through April 30, 2026. Comments from the public help Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services consider diverse points of view and improve the quality of this manual.

Please Note: The current Storm Water Design Manual remains in effect.

Anticipated Timeline

  • The updated full online version of the design manual is intended to be adopted by July 1, 2026.
  • Applicability of design manual changes will be required for any new submittal as of July 1, 2026. Please verify this with the applicable review agency to confirm design expectations.
