Shamrock Drive Complete Street

Project Overview

Shamrock Drive is a one-mile neighborhood street and east-west connection between Beckwith Place and Flamingo Avenue. This project will make it safer and more comfortable to travel, whether you walk, bike, ride the bus or drive. Two new roundabouts will help slow traffic and simplify turns. Continuous sidewalks and buffered bike lanes on both sides of the street will connect people to schools, transit and the future Briar Creek Greenway. Storm drainage improvements will help reduce flooding. The project is being delivered with the Eastway Drive and Shamrock Drive Intersection project as one connected corridor.

Why This Corridor?

Shamrock Drive is a one-mile corridor east of Uptown that works as both a neighborhood street and a key east-west route between The Plaza and Eastway Drive. Its current design creates challenges for people walking, biking and driving. Sidewalks and bike facilities are not continuous, and some areas see flooding. This project grew out of community planning for the Central/Albemarle/Shamrock neighborhood improvement program and responds to needs residents have raised for years.

The corridor sits on four of the city's safety and priority networks: the High Injury Network, the Bicycle Priority Network, the Complete Streets Priority Network and the Pedestrian Priority Network. It serves CATS Route 23 and connects people to Shamrock Gardens Elementary, Garinger High School and the future Briar Creek Greenway.

What We're Building

A complete street is designed to work safely for everyone who uses it. This project keeps vehicle capacity on Shamrock Drive while adding safer crossings and continuous space for walking and biking. It carries the improvements at the Eastway/Shamrock intersection along the full mile of the corridor, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is upgrading the storm drainage system at the same time.

Improvements include two roundabouts, continuous sidewalk and buffered bike lanes on both sides of the street, pedestrian refuge islands, ADA curb ramp upgrades, and lighting and visibility improvements.
