City Outlines Data Center Engagement Opportunities for Community

On Monday, June 8, Charlotte City Council voted to establish a moratorium on data centers. The moratorium includes a specific timeline for research, feedback and policy change recommendations.
During the Aug. 3 Transportation, Planning and Development Committee meeting, staff presented several opportunities for the public to stay engaged in this conversation and offer feedback as council considers changes to policy.
If policy changes are recommended, council would be able to take action near the moratorium’s end date on Nov. 5, 2026.
Task Force
A task force is convening to prepare policy recommendations through a series of seven meetings. The group will include council-appointed community members and technical industry experts. Meetings will be recorded and available to the public on the City of Charlotte YouTube page.

Public Education and Outreach
The city is working on the launch of materials for residents to better understand what data centers are and where the city has authority for change. City staff will also continue to update the public and City Council through the Transportation, Planning and Development Committee. Committee meetings are public and streamed through the GOV Channel and available on the City of Charlotte YouTube page.
Community Survey
A survey will be made public for feedback from the community in mid-August. The survey will ask participants to rank their priorities and concerns around data centers as well as identify what solutions they may support.
Public Meetings
Throughout the month of September, the city will host public meetings to help inform and educate neighbors about data center impact and the roles of the city, county and state in fostering change. The meetings will be open to the public and allow participants to ask questions and give feedback along the way. There will be four in-person and two virtual meetings.

Public Hearing
Once feedback is gathered and a task force recommendation has been made, the city will post the information and a draft policy to the website and council will hold a public hearing. Residents will have the opportunity to give feedback on the proposed changes ahead of a council vote. The hearing will be live streamed to the GOV Channel and available on the City of Charlotte YouTube page.
