The City of Charlotte is currently accepting applications to fill the mayoral seat vacancy. Below are frequently asked questions to help guide interested applicants through the process.

Who can apply for the Mayoral seat?

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a registered voter in Mecklenburg County
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a registered Democrat
  • Reside within the corporate boundaries of the city
  • Be qualified to vote in City Council elections

When does the application period open and close?

  • Opens: Tuesday June 2 at 9 a.m.
  • Closes: Tuesday, June 9 at 5 p.m.

Late applications will not be accepted

What is the timeline for the appointment process?

June 11 Completed applications provided to City Council
June 15 In-person Candidate Forum for applicants (2 p.m.)
June 22 City Council makes appointment
July 1  Swearing-In ceremony for interim mayor appointee

What is the candidates forum?

The candidates forum will allow qualified applicants to briefly introduce themselves and share their interest in serving as Mayor. The forum will take place June 15 at 2 p.m. It is open to the public and will be streamed live on the GOV Channel.

What happens after the appointment is made?

The selected applicant will:

  • Be formally sworn in at a Special Meeting on July 1
  • Begin serving immediately. The mayoral appointee will serve until the elected candidate in the November 2027 municipal elections takes office.
