Green Crown Program Relaunches with Expanded Eligibility
Published on June 16, 2026
Applications are open for the Green Crown Program, a citywide voluntary and free program that shines a spotlight on eating and drinking establishments and hospitality businesses implementing environmentally sustainable practices.
Originally launched a few years ago and limited in eligibility, the program is now revamped and has expanded to include not only businesses in the restaurant and beverage industries but also those in the hospitality industry. That includes, but is not limited to, restaurants, breweries, bars, coffee shops, caterers, hotels and event venues.
Priority applications for the 2026 cohort will be accepted through July 1.
“The Green Crown Program is one of the many ways for local businesses to partner with the city and contribute toward our communitywide goals outlined in the Strategic Energy Action Plan Plus,” said Chief Sustainability & Resilience Officer Heather Bolick. “Get your Green Crown today to see how this program can benefit your business while having positive impact on the world around us.”
Benefits that participants can look forward to include recognition from the city, promotional visibility, peer learning opportunities and connection to sustainability resources.
There are separate applications — restaurant, hospitality and catering. All can be found on the Green Crown Program web page.
Many application parameters are practices that businesses already have in place, such as recycling waste and offering reusable, biodegradable or compostable tableware. This program is an opportunity for Charlotte businesses to be recognized for those efforts.
Applications submitted after July 1 will still be accepted for future consideration and to help businesses stay connected to upcoming Green Crown opportunities.
The Green Crown Program complements the city’s larger sustainability and resiliency strategy while offering businesses the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the environment. Qualification for certification is determined through four main categories: Waste Management, Energy and Water Conservation, Pollution Reduction and Commitment to the Community.
Program participation allows businesses to be celebrated for their sustainability while continuing to grow and learn to create a healthier environment for all.
