City Announces Closure on Matheson Avenue through Late 2026

Matheson Avenue between Chick Godley Road and Jordan Place is closed in both directions to accommodate construction for the Matheson Avenue Streetscape Project.

Through traffic is restricted between Jordan Place and The Plaza on the east side of the bridge and between North Tryon Street and Chick Godley Road on the west side. Pedestrian and bicycle access on the north side of the bridge will be maintained for the duration of this closure.

This closure is necessary to allow the contractor to rehabilitate the bridge, improve the roadway, upgrade sidewalks and bicycle facilities, enhance stormwater drainage, and install new pavement markings and traffic signals needed to enhance safety and extend the life of the corridor. The roadway is expected to re-open in late 2026.

Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled. When this occurs, city staff and contractors will attempt to resolve the situation and inform the public as quickly as possible.

DETOURS

A signed detour is in place for the duration of the closure. Motorists are being directed around the work zone using The Plaza, East 36th Street, North Davidson Street and Jordan Place to reconnect with Matheson Avenue on either side of the bridge.

To ensure worker and motorist safety, please obey all directional signage in the project area.

Residents can sign up to receive daily road closure notices and other updates or view current impacts anytime using the interactive street closure map. Closures included in the Charlotte Street Closure Map also populate the Waze application, and travelers are encouraged to use the Waze navigation tool when traveling throughout Charlotte. You may also visit the DriveNC website for current road conditions, traffic updates and the latest closures affecting this state-maintained road.

The Matheson Avenue Bridge Streetscape project will incorporate pedestrian, bicycle and aesthetic improvements on Matheson Avenue between North Tryon Street and Jordan Place, providing improved connections between North Tryon Street and the LYNX Blue Line, the Cross Charlotte Trail and the popular NoDa area. The project will include a two-way cycle track along the south side of the bridge, separated from the roadway by a three-foot-wide curb. New sidewalk will be installed on both sides of the bridge.
