Averitt Announces New Commitment to Charlotte

Averitt, one of the nation’s leading transportation and supply chain management providers, has announced it will build a new regional campus near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The expansion will allow the Tennessee-based company to more than double its Charlotte workforce, adding an additional 211 associates over the next four years, with an average annual wage of $81,769.
The development, on just over 100 acres in a commercial area on Shopton Road, will serve as home to Averitt’s entire regional operation, a single, integrated campus that brings together all five of the company’s service units: less-than-truckload (LTL), truckload, dedicated, distribution and fulfillment and integrated services.
“This Charlotte expansion represents one of the most exciting and distinctive facility investments in Averitt’s 55-year history; it will be unlike any other Averitt location in the country,” said Barry Blakely, president and chief operating officer at Averitt. “We’ve been searching for several years to find the perfect location to establish this type of presence in the Carolinas, and what better place than in Charlotte, a growing logistics hub with an outstanding talent base, strategic location and expanding infrastructure.”
Construction on the campus is expected to begin immediately and be completed in 2028. While numbers are still being refined, the development could top more than $200 million when it is fully built.

New positions will include local and over-the-road drivers, dock associates, diesel mechanics, sales, administrative support and other logistics professionals. According to the company, a significant number of the new positions will not require a college or advanced degree and will be supported by on-the-job training, leadership development tracks and clear advancement opportunities.
“Averitt’s decision to expand its footprint in our community underscores Mecklenburg County’s standing as the Southeast’s leading logistics hub, where supply chain innovation thrives,” said Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chair Mark Jerrell. “These jobs offer accessible pathways to stable, family-sustaining careers through hands-on skill development.”
The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County partnered with the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and the North Carolina Community College System on the project.
The campus will include:
- A two-story, 16,000-square-foot regional office with training and collaboration space.
- A 75,000-square-foot, 150-door cross-dock, expandable to 200 doors.
- Two warehouses totaling more than 500,000 square feet of distribution and fulfillment space.
- Parking for more than 400 trailers, plus fleet maintenance, fueling, and driver support facilities to elevate the day-to-day experience of its drivers.
The new campus will replace the 40,000-square-foot service center Averitt currently operates at 3708 Westinghouse Blvd. with 182 full-time associates. Averitt opened its first Charlotte office in 1987.
Charlotte is emerging as a logistics hub, with the infrastructure, talent and connectivity to support companies as they scale. Transportation and logistics is one of the Charlotte region’s fastest growing sectors, with total regional employment of 84,000, an increase of 14% since 2020.
This announcement adds to the strong momentum driving business growth in Charlotte. Over the past 12 months, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County partnered to create 6,568 jobs and a capital investment of more than $739 million, including Scout Motors, Maersk and SMBC Group.
