From War-Torn Ukraine to Charlotte Fire: A Recruit’s Journey of Hope

Bohdan Fetisov, 28, is no stranger to hardship. Two years ago, he left his war-torn home in Ukraine to seek safety and a better future in the United States. Now, as a member of Charlotte Fire Recruit Class 129, set to graduate on Feb. 7, 2025, he is close to achieving his dream of becoming an American firefighter.
“My goal has always been to help people,” Fetisov said. “Becoming a firefighter here is my way of giving back to a country that has supported Ukraine during its hardest times.”

Fetisov’s path to the Charlotte Fire Academy is as inspiring as it is unlikely, marked by resilience, gratitude, and a deep desire to serve.
Fleeing a Nation at War
When Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, Fetisov knew he had to make a difficult decision. His hometown of Krivoy Rog, located about 50 miles from the conflict zone, had become increasingly dangerous. Explosions and unrest were constant reminders of the war’s proximity.
“I love Ukraine, but staying there was no longer safe,” he said. “I had to think about my future.”

With the help of friends, Fetisov left his family behind and made his way to the U.S., arriving in Charlotte with little more than hope and determination. His wife, Anastiia, joined him in this new chapter of life, but his parents and extended family remained in Ukraine.
“It’s not easy being away from them,” Fetisov said. “I haven’t seen my family in two years. Once I graduate, I plan to visit them, even if it’s just for a week.”
Fetisov’s journey to safety was made easier by his fluency in English, a skill he developed over a decade as a translator in Ukraine. “Language was never a barrier for me,” he said. “That made transitioning to life here much smoother.”
Finding a New Purpose
Even before leaving Ukraine, Fetisov had heard about Charlotte Fire. Friends in Charlotte spoke highly of its reputation and training programs.
The back of Fetisov’s turnout gear proudly displays his name as he trains alongside fellow recruits to prepare for real-world emergencies.
“They told me it’s one of the toughest academies in the country,” he said. “I wanted to test myself and see if I could meet the challenge.”
Fetisov’s interest in firefighting was sparked years earlier when Ukrainian firefighters visited his high school. “They showed us what it takes to be a firefighter, and I was fascinated,” he said. “That memory stuck with me.”
Upon arriving in Charlotte, he immediately applied to Charlotte Fire, passing the rigorous selection process on his first attempt. “I’m blessed to have been accepted,” he said. “This is my dream, and now it’s my reality.”
Overcoming Challenges
The Charlotte Fire Academy is known for its physical and mental demands, and Fetisov’s experience was no exception. While his background as a translator helped him communicate effectively, technical terminology and the pace of the EMT certification process posed challenges.

“The EMT course was the toughest part for me,” he said. “But I’m not someone who looks for easy ways out. I’m here to challenge myself.”
Fetisov credits the Academy’s staff and his classmates for helping him succeed. “The chiefs, captains, and my classmates are incredible,” he said. “They’ve been so supportive, and I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Standing side by side with a fellow recruit, Fetisov listens attentively during a briefing, embodying the collaborative spirit of firefighting.
For Fetisov, the Academy has been more than just training—it’s been a transformative experience. “This isn’t just a job,” he said. “It’s a calling.”
A Unique Perspective
Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson expressed admiration for Fetisov’s journey and commitment. “Bohdan’s story is a testament to the courage and determination we value in our department,” Chief Johnson said. “His resilience inspires all of us, and we are proud to have him as part of the Charlotte Fire family.”
Fetisov’s background offers him a unique perspective on life and service. Having lived through war, he values the freedoms and opportunities he now has in the United States.

“What I appreciate most here is the freedom,” he said. “Seeing American flags on homes touches me deeply. It reminds me of how much this country values liberty.”
Fetisov hopes his story inspires his peers and highlights the importance of gratitude. “When you’ve seen what I’ve seen, you learn to appreciate even the smallest things,” he said. “I want to bring that perspective to the firehouse and the community.”
His journey has already had an impact. Fellow recruits have expressed admiration for his determination and resilience. “When they hear my story, they tell me it puts things in perspective,” he said. “That means a lot to me.”
A New Home, a New Mission
Fetisov is adamant that Charlotte is now his home. “This city has embraced me, and I’m ready to give back,” he said. “Becoming a firefighter here is my way of serving the community that welcomed me.”

Despite the challenges of being away from his family and the ongoing war in Ukraine, Fetisov remains optimistic about the future. “I miss my home country, but I’m focused on building a life here,” he said. “This is where I belong now.”

With just weeks left in the Academy, Fetisov is eager to join the ranks of Charlotte Fire. He looks forward to the challenges and rewards of the job, from fighting fires to helping those in need.
