Overview

The 6th and Graham Storm Drainage Improvement Project will reduce street flooding in the area. Located within a drainage area of approximately 200 acres, the project will replace and/or rehabilitate aging infrastructure and provide improved drainage system capacity. The project area is bordered by 7th Street to the northeast, Norfolk Southern rail lines near Smith Street to the northwest, North Tryon Street to the southeast and 5th Street to the southwest.

Project Updates

September 2025

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services and engineering consultant HDR continue with the design phase. The project team is developing detailed drawings for the proposed improvements.

Construction Coming Soon on West 6th Street

  • Ahead of the larger 6th and Graham Storm Drainage Improvement Project, Storm Water Services will begin construction on West 6th Street, between North Poplar Street and North Church Street. 
  • Construction is anticipated to start later this year and will require a multi-month road closure. The project team is coordinating with nearby businesses and residential complexes.
  • A mailer will be sent in advance with additional information, including the anticipated road closure date and duration.
