Transcript for Project Presentation

Thank you for participating in the Mallard Creek Shared Use Path project online public meeting.

This meeting should last about eight minutes. If you have any questions or comments, a link to a comment form is posted on the project web page at charlottenc dot gov slash mallardcreek.  This comment form will go to a member of the project team. With your feedback, please mention how you heard about this meeting.

If you require assistance with this presentation, please contact one of the project managers, whose contact information is listed at the end of this presentation and on the project web page.

The purpose of this meeting is to share the current design of the Mallard Creek Shared Use Path, provide a quick update on the overall project status, and to collect any comments that you may have. Comments will be collected until 5 p.m. on June 19, 2026.

The purpose of this project is centered around improving connectivity, accessibility, and safety along Mallard Creek Road.

We are constructing a new shared use path from Governor Hunt Drive to 10310 Mallard Creek Road (across from Driwood Court) to make it easier for people walking or biking to get around.

We are also installing ADA-compliant curb ramps to ensure the corridor is accessible for everyone.

Finally, this project aims to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety and comfort along the entire corridor, creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for all users.

This project was selected primarily to address pedestrian and bicyclist safety and connectivity needs along Mallard Creek Road.

Currently, new developments along this corridor have created sections of a shared-use path as part of their projects. Our goal is to tie into those newly built sections and create a continuous shared-use path from Governor Hunt Drive to Driwood Court. This will provide a safe, separated facility for both pedestrians and cyclists, offering a much-improved experience for everyone.

The project is funded by the City of Charlotte’s sidewalk program.

This project is located along Mallard Creek Road. For location reference, the Mallard Creek shared-use path project is shown here in yellow. The gaps in the yellow line are the sections that have been built by the new developments that were mentioned on the previous slide.

Here’s a comparison of what the roadway currently looks like now versus how it is proposed to look. As shown in red, the new shared-use path will be located on the east side of Mallard Creek Road.

Our proposed typical section consists of:

  • A planting strip that varies from zero to 20 feet wide adjacent to the existing Mallard Creek roadway
  • A 10- to 11-foot-wide concrete shared-use path

Now, let’s walk through the project corridor from Governor Hunt Dr to Driwood Court and look at the key improvements along each segment.

Between Governor Hunt Drive and Delray Apartment Development:

  • The shared-use path will tie into the existing curb ramp located on the south side of Governor Hunt Drive and connect to the newly constructed 12-foot-wide shared-use path that was built by the Delray Apartment development.

Between the Delray Apartment Development and the Apaloosa Apartment Development:

  • The project will be tying in with the 12-foot-wide wide shared-use paths on both sides – the Delray path on the south side and the Apaloosa path on the north side.
  • Along this segment, three driveways will be reconstructed to meet the current design standards.

Finally, between Apaloosa Development and 10310 Mallard Creek Road, across from Driwood Court:

  • The project will tie in with the 12-foot-wide shared-use path on the Apaloosa path on the south side and continue all the way to 10310 Mallard Creek Road.
  • This portion will also include the construction of five curb ramps, three driveways, and two retaining walls. The limits of the retaining walls are shown here.

Altogether, these improvements will create a 0.76 mile long, continuous, ADA-compliant shared-use path from Governor Hunt Drive to 10310 Mallard Creek Road (across from Driwood Court), tying together multiple development projects and significantly improving safety and connectivity along Mallard Creek Road.

This project is currently in the design phase and has started the Real Estate Acquisition phase. During the real estate phase, a representative for the City will contact any affected property owners to purchase easements needed for the project.

After all necessary easements are acquired, the utility companies will begin relocating their facilities as needed and then the project will be put out to bid for construction. Construction is anticipated to begin late 2027.

Any specific question related to the acquisition of easements can be directed to the city’s real estate project manager and questions related to the schedule to the city’s project manager. Their information will be provided at the end of the presentation.

If you would like to provide comments on the design presented, please use the link on the project web page at charlottenc gov slash mallard creek to provide input to the project team. Comments will be collected through June 19, 2026.

If you have additional questions or need assistance with this presentation, please contact Toni Wilson, Engineering Project Manager with City of Charlotte General Services at 704 560 6257 or toni dot Wilson at charlottenc dot gov. For specific questions related to the acquisition of easements, please contact Kim Calhoun, senior real estate project manager with City of Charlotte General Services at 704 634 1206 or Kimberly dot Calhoun at charlottenc dot gov.

We appreciate your interest in the project and look forward to your comments. This presentation is now complete. Thank you.

Project Overview

This project will construct an approximately 0.75-mile-long (4,000 linear feet), 10-foot-wide concrete shared-use path along the east side of Mallard Creek Road from Governor Hunt Road to Driwood Curt. Specific improvements will also include an 8-foot-wide planting strip, curb & gutter, accessible ramps, driveways and potential drainage infrastructure.

Project Goals

  • To improve pedestrian safety, mobility and connectivity along Mallard Creek Road

Public Involvement

The project team will engage the public to get resident feedback and share information about the project. The first meeting is expected to take place in the fall of 2024. Details will be shared once they are determined.
