What is Long Range Planning?

The Long Range Planning Division helps Charlotte grow in ways that are equitable, sustainable, and intentional. We develop policies that guide growth, build strong partnerships across departments, agencies, and neighborhoods, and ground decisions in data and community input.

At the heart of this work is Charlotte Future 2040, a set of documents that guide how our City will grow:

Our work is organized into three core program areas:

  • Community Planning - partners with residents and stakeholders to guide growth and development through collaborative, place-based planning efforts.
  • Policy Evaluation & Innovation - uses data and policy insights to track and report progress and evaluate improvements.
  • Data Analytics & Visualization - delivers spatial analysis and mapping tools that support informed, equitable, and transparent decision-making.
