On April 13, 2026, Charlotte City Council adopted seven Community Area Plans and the Revised Policy Map and amended seven Community Area Plans.

City staff has incorporated the approved changes into the plans and released the final documents (linked below).

What is Long Range Planning?

The Long Range Planning Division helps Charlotte grow in ways that are equitable, sustainable, and intentional. We develop policies that guide growth, build strong partnerships across departments, agencies, and neighborhoods, and ground decisions in data and community input.

At the heart of this work is Charlotte Future 2040, a set of documents that guide how our City will grow:

Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan - Establishes the long-term vision and goals for Charlotte's future.
Charlotte Future 2040 Policy Map - Shows the different types of development expected across the City.
Charlotte Future 2040 Community Area Plans - Provide more detailed guidance tailored to the needs and opportunities of Charlotte's communities.

Our work is organized into three core program areas:

Community Planning - partners with residents and stakeholders to guide growth and development through collaborative, place-based planning efforts.
Policy Evaluation & Innovation - uses data and policy insights to track and report progress and evaluate improvements.
Data Analytics & Visualization - delivers spatial analysis and mapping tools that support informed, equitable, and transparent decision-making.
