Mayoral Statements on Federal Activity in Charlotte

I am aware of reports of immigration enforcement activity that may be coming to Charlotte. It is important that we keep to the facts that we know, as there are many rumors in the community that as far as we know are not verified and we do not want to cause additional alarm in an uncertain environment.
First and foremost: Every person who lives, works, studies or visits our city deserves to feel safe, respected and protected under the law. Charlotte is a strong and welcoming community—rooted in respect for the inherent dignity of all people.
Charlotte is committed to following the law and to protecting the rights of all people who call our city home. Our police department continues to focus on keeping our neighborhoods safe and maintaining public trust. We remain dedicated to fair and lawful policing for everyone.
I understand that many in our community may feel anxiety or uncertainty. I understand how unsettling it can be when the sense of security you have in your daily life is shaken. I want to assure you: Your concerns matter. Your safety matters. Your rights matter. Charlotte’s strength lies in our unity and mutual respect. We are safer together. We are stronger together. Let us continue working toward a city where everyone feels safe, valued, and able to contribute to our shared future.
As Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has shared, CMPD does not participate in ICE operations, nor is CMPD involved in the planning of these federal activities. CMPD would only become involved in situations where there are criminal behavior or criminal warrants that fall under CMPD’s jurisdiction.

Today, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Border Patrol will be in Charlotte conducting operations as early as this weekend and potentially into next week. We still don’t know any details on where they may be operating and to what extent. I understand this news will create uncertainty and anxiety for many people in our community. Everyone in our community deserves to feel secure and I am committed to doing all that I can to inform our community, help make sure everyone feels safe, and understands their rights. It is also important that people understand CMPD is not involved in federal immigration activities, so people who need local law enforcement services should feel secure calling 911. There continues to be rumors about enforcement activities and I would ask that everyone refrain from sharing unverified information. Doing so creates more fear and uncertainty when we need to be standing together. We will continue to work with local and state partners to do what we can to ensure the safety of our community.

Estoy al tanto de los informes sobre reportes de control migratorio que podrían venir a Charlotte. Como ha compartido el Departamento de Policía de Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMPD), CMPD no participa en operaciones de ICE, ni está involucrado en la planificación de estas actividades federales. También es importante que las personas comprendan que CMPD no está involucrado en actividades federales de inmigración, por lo que las personas que necesiten servicios de la policía local deberían sentirse seguros llamando al 911.
Continúan circulando rumores de control migratorio, y les pido a todos que se abstengan de compartir información que no ha sido verificada.
