Solid Waste Services Welcomes Spring

It is officially spring in Charlotte, and temperatures are creeping up to make it feel like the real deal. As we say goodbye to winter, we’ve got Solid Waste Services reminders to help you with your spring cleaning.

Bulky Waste

After spring cleaning, you may find yourself with items you are looking to clear out of your home. Some can be donated, others can be placed in the garbage, and a few might need to be scheduled for bulky item collection. 

Not sure what bulky waste is or how to get rid of it? Bulky items are things such as household furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment and similar items that are too large to be placed in the garbage rollout cart and are not eligible for recycling or yard waste collection. You can review a bulky item eligibility list online.

There are a few ways to schedule a bulky collection. You can call 311 (or 704-336-7600); use the CLT+ app; or schedule pickup online. Choose the most convenient way for you!

Yard Waste

Getting your yard in order after a long winter can be a tall task. We want to make sure the city’s yard waste guidelines are easy to find and follow.

Yard waste is collected from the curb once a week on your scheduled collection day, provided that the materials meet preparation requirements. The waste is then made into mulch and compost for reuse. Residents must use paper yard waste bags or reusable containers weighing no more than 75 pounds when preparing leaves and grass clippings for yard waste collection. Limbs and branches will be collected loose as long as they meet the size requirements.

General Information

Solid Waste Services offers text alerts for collection updates, service disruptions, recycling and waste preparation tips, quick surveys, and other important city service information. Residents who would like to receive updates can text their day of service to 73224. The text alerts are available in English and Spanish. For example, if your collection day is Thursday, you would text “Thursday” for English updates and “Jueves” for Spanish updates to 73224.  

You can find your collection day by visiting the city’s property tool, My Charlotte Lookup. Type in your address to be reminded of what day of the week you receive service and if you are an orange or green recycling week.
