Free AC Units Available for Eligible Residents

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 25, 2025) – The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation are working together to provide free air conditioning units to eligible residents. Residents at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI) can participate.

AC units will be available for pickup on Thursday, August 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eastway Regional Recreation Center (3150 Eastway Park Drive) and Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center (2921 Tuckaseegee Road). A valid photo ID is required at pickup.

Applicants can register on the free AC units application page. Advanced registration is required to receive a unit.

When registering, you will also be asked to share your address, whether you rent or own your home, and the type of home you live in (such as multifamily apartment or single-family home). This information will be used only to help the city better understand community cooling needs and to plan for future programming. No other data will be retained.
