City Celebrating Welcoming Week

Welcoming Week, an annual campaign that celebrates the work in communities to become welcoming places for all, runs from Sept. 10-19. Welcoming Week provides individuals and organizations the opportunity to showcase their values through events and initiatives that foster connections and collaboration between immigrants and non-immigrants, as well as belonging for all.
To celebrate, the city is hosting several events, all offering different ways to connect with your community.
Charlotte Moves: Dance Across Culture
An interactive dance workshop where participants can learn different dance styles represented across Charlotte’s communities. The focus is on participation, connection and having fun together rather than simply watching a performance.

One Beat: Community Drum Workshop
An interactive drum experience exploring different cultural rhythms and traditions, eventually bringing participants together around one shared rhythm.

Charlotte International Cabinet Meeting
The Charlotte International Cabinet is hosting its Sept. 16 meeting at CMGC during the annual Welcoming Week celebration. The meeting is from 9-10:30 a.m., and there will be groups tabling with resources and information beginning at 8 a.m. If you would like to table, fill out the tabling registration form.

Lost in Translation: More Than Language
Rather than a traditional panel, this is a storytelling-style conversation about the moments when language and culture collide. Topics include accents, humor, workplace culture, parenting, cultural norms, identity and the misunderstandings that happen when we experience the world differently.

Finding Home: When Does a City Become Yours?
A small, story-centered conversation bringing together immigrants, Charlotte natives, and people who have made Charlotte home.

The Welcome Table
Join us for a simple community gathering centered around food and conversation. Participants are encouraged to sit with new neighbors and discuss topics related to Welcoming Week.
