SIA Arrowood Road Ribbon Cutting

On Sept. 4, the City of Charlotte hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating eight mobility projects in the Arrowood area. The projects are part of the city's Strategic Investment Areas (SIA) program, an innovative approach to delivering mobility and transportation improvements more quickly and efficiently in neighborhoods where they can have the greatest impact.

The ribbon cutting took place in front of the South Academy of International Languages (SAIL) where a newly installed pedestrian hybrid beacon is already helping students and families safely cross the street to get to school.

District 3 Council Member Joi Mayo welcomed attendees and spoke on the impact these projects will have on the local community.

"This crossing is part of a larger vision for what safety looks like across Charlotte," said Council Member Mayo. "We're building a city where getting around on foot, by bike or behind the wheel feels safe no matter where you live. At the end of the day, this is what it looks like when a city invests in its people, not just its pavement."

In addition to the new pedestrian hybrid beacon, the event celebrated seven more projects throughout the Arrowood SIA, including new vertical safety elements for bicyclists along Whitehall Park Drive; new street trees providing shade along Arrowood and Hebron streets; a redesigned intersection at Arrowood and South Boulevard; new sidewalks on England Street and Sharon Lakes Road; ADA ramps and sidewalk infrastructure along Kings Ridge Drive; and a full set of Arrowood SIA safety enhancements across the area.

Once the SIA pilot is complete, projects in Arrowood will result in 3,080 feet of new sidewalks, 7,640 feet of ADA accessibility upgrades, eight signalized pedestrian crossings, four bus stop enhancements and 715 feet of street lighting.
