City Activates Digital Kiosk Program with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Last Thursday, August 20, the City of Charlotte was proud to be joined by IKE Smart City, elected officials, community leaders and residents to welcome the first digital kiosk to the Queen City.

Attendees gathered in the right-of-way at the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and West Fifth Street, across the street from Five Points Plaza, for remarks and a demonstration of the kiosk.

“We want to be ambitious and innovative with our mobility planning, and that includes how we use this right-of-way,” said Debbie Smith, director of Charlotte Department of Transportation. “As CDOT works to connect places and people, these kiosks are going to help us connect the community to the variety of information and resources.”

The kiosks will expand information access; highlight local businesses and resources; support public safety and connectivity; and enhance public space civic engagement.

“A lot of people always ask if we are moving in the right direction when it comes to community economic development,” said Sha Rana, director of the Economic Development Department. “Here’s your sign that we are.”

The digital kiosk program is a partnership with IKE Smart City to install at least 30 interactive kiosks in areas including Corridors of Opportunity and Municipal Service Districts. While 30 kiosks are the first phase of the project, there is the potential for more in the future.
