Award Nominations and Parade Registration Open for MLK Celebration
Published on September 16, 2025
Every year, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County through their Community Relations Committee come together to expand our community's observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg MLK National Holiday Celebration.
One staple event is the parade, where over 100 community organizations, marching bands, and step and drill teams weave through the streets of uptown Charlotte. Registration for the parade, which will be on Saturday, Jan. 17, is open now. The deadline to register is Saturday, Dec. 13. Register today.
In addition to marching in the parade or cheering participants on, you can also choose to volunteer.
As part of the annual celebration, multiple awards are given, all of which depend on community input.
The Growing the Dream award honors Charlotte-Mecklenburg's unsung heroes — grassroots leaders who advance diversity, unity and uplift the community despite the hardship in their lives. Nominate a deserving person for the Growing the Dream award before the Nov. 29 deadline.
As part of the Growing the Dream luncheon, there will be a special emphasis on youth engagement, showcasing the contributions of students and young leaders who exemplify Dr. King’s vision of service, justice and community empowerment. Students have the opportunity to apply for the 2026 Emerging Leader Youth award and be recognized for their leadership, service and dedication. The deadline to apply is Saturday, Nov. 29.
The Medallion and Keeper of the Dream awards celebrate individuals who embody racial equality, social justice and active community service. These are the people who step up for others when walking away is the easier thing to do. Take a moment to reflect on someone who inspires you. Nominations are being accepted for the 2026 award now through Saturday, Dec. 13.
The full agenda of events is updated on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg MLK Celebration web page as details are finalized.
