Meet the Mayor

Vi Lyles serves as the Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, and is one of the city's most experienced and respected public leaders. First elected in 2017, Mayor Lyles has been entrusted by the voters with multiple consecutive terms, reflecting broad confidence in her steady and principled leadership.

Mayor Lyles was raised in Columbia, South Carolina, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Queens University of Charlotte and a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her professional career spans more than three decades in public service, the majority of which were dedicated to the City of Charlotte. Prior to holding elected office, she served in several senior management roles, including Budget Director and Assistant City Manager, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening the city's financial management and long-term planning, including the development of Charlotte's first capital budget.

In 2013, Mayor Lyles was elected to the Charlotte City Council as an at-large representative and later served as Mayor Pro Tempore. As Mayor, she has emphasized response growth, fiscal stewardship, and inclusive bi-partisan governance. Her administration has prioritized affordable housing, transportation and mobility, public safety, and sustainable economic development. Notable initiatives under her leadership include significant investments in affordable housing, job and workforce development, public safety initiatives, including SAFE Charlotte, adoption of the Charlotte 2040 Comprehensive Plan, and advancing the region's transportation and transit programs, including a successful referendum to fund Charlotte Moves, a 30-year plan to advance mobility programs in Mecklenburg County.
