Personal:
Council Member Joi Mayo is the proud daughter of retired educator Stephanie Mayo and real estate brokerage owner John Thomas Mayo. Raised in Richmond, Virginia, she grew up learning the value of public service, thoughtful city planning, and building strong relationships to create meaningful, lasting change. Those early lessons continue to shape her commitment to advancing opportunity, safety, and equity across Charlotte.

Professional Experience:
Before joining City Council, Council Member Mayo served as a middle school math and social studies teacher with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, where she witnessed firsthand how strong communities create strong schools. She currently serves as Community Engagement Manager for a local environmental nonprofit, where she leads efforts to expand Charlotte’s urban tree canopy and advance environmental justice in historically underserved neighborhoods.
Civic Engagement:
Council Member Mayo has a long record of community leadership and service. She is the Founder and Board Chair of Transforming Nations Ford (TNF), a community development nonprofit dedicated to improving safety, strengthening neighborhood pride, and expanding access to opportunity throughout Southwest Charlotte.

- Transportation Chair, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Climate Leaders (CMCL)
- President, Kings Creek Homeowners Association (HOA) for nine years

- Member, Urban League of Central Carolinas (ULCC) Young Professionals
