Council Member Dimple Ajmera

Education: University of Southern California, bachelor’s degree in accounting; Certified Public Accountant license.

Professional Experience: Council Member Ajmera went from cleaning hotel rooms to putting herself through college to managing multimillion-dollar budgets as an accountant. She left her successful career in finance to serve on the Charlotte City Council.

Civic Engagement: Former board member of the Charlotte Housing Authority, Young Democrats of Mecklenburg County and the Asian American Caucus.

Key Achievements: Council Member Ajmera was the first Asian-American and youngest women to be elected to City Council. She is dedicated to helping Charlotte become a global leader in sustainability and supported the adoption of the Strategic Energy Action Plan the city’s first-ever framework to transition to a low carbon future. Within 24 hours of its passing, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Charlotte to announce a $2.5 million grant from his foundation toward Charlotte’s efforts to fight climate change. She played an integral role in securing the funding and neighborhood support for the St. John’s Place affordable housing development. Ajmera continues to work to expand access to affordable housing, increase local awareness and action on school safety, and bring traction and economic opportunities to the 69-acre Eastland site, an area left undeveloped for years.

Platform and Goals: Council Member Ajmera’s key priorities include public safety, affordable housing, a healthy environment, women’s equality, economic development, and infrastructure.

Awards and Recognitions: She has been awarded the 2018 Rotary International Global Service Award, the 2019 Clean Air Carolina Blue Sky award for public policy work, the Café Mocha Radio Community Advocate award, and the NAACP Excellence in Leadership Award. She’s also been named one of Longleaf Politics' 54 Top Young Political Stars in North Carolina, one of the 50 most influential women in Mecklenburg County by the Mecklenburg Times, and one of Charlotte Business Journal's 40 under 40.
