Youth Career Experiences

Youth career experiences give young people real pathways into the world of work. Through a blend of paid internships, hands-on training, leadership development, and career exploration, students gain the confidence, skills, and networks they need to navigate their future with purpose.

Mayor's Youth Employment Program (MYEP)

The Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) is a six-week paid work experience that offers high school students ages 16-18 the opportunity to explore careers, build real-world skills, and learn what professionalism looks like on the job, opening doors to future education and career opportunities. Students will work with one employer during this time for at least 25 hours/week, earning at least $13/hour. We partner with host employers across Charlotte’s private, public, and nonprofit sectors to offer meaningful, hands-on work experiences. By working with MYEP, businesses help young people set career goals, stay in school, succeed academically, and develop the social skills they need to thrive at work and in life.

MYEP Pathways

Students can explore a variety of hands-on, career-building pathways through partnerships across the city. Below are two examples of what past participants experienced while building skills, confidence, and connections that open doors to future opportunities.

A Seat at the Table

In partnership with She Built This City, MYEP participants explored careers in construction, public art, and leadership through a hands-on building experience. Students learned to use power tools, measure and cut lumber, and bring a project from concept to completion — ultimately crafting their own wooden chair.

More than a construction project, this pathway helped young people build confidence, practice teamwork, and see themselves as creators and leaders in their community.

ACCESS: Apartment Career Credentials Empowering Student Success

Through a partnership with the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association, MYEP students gained an inside look at Charlotte’s apartment and property management industry. Participants explored everything from marketing and reputation management to customer service, leasing, fair housing, and day-to-day operations of an apartment community. Students learned how to qualify prospective residents, give effective tours, complete leases, respond to resident needs, and use data and technology to support business operations. Graduates earned a provisional certificate from the National Apartment Association Education Institute — giving them a valuable credential and a head start in a growing industry.

Some of these have included job and career readiness training, youth job fairs, resume writing assistance, developing interviewing skills, learning personal branding techniques, and more. Interested in bringing one of these events to a group of young people? Contact us at youth@charlottenc.gov to get involved.

Envision Academy

Envision Academy is a leadership and career exploration program that helps young people in Charlotte learn about real career paths, build confidence, and connect what they’re learning in school to their future goals. Through hands-on activities, site visits, and time with mentors, participants see how their interests and strengths can shape their next steps after high school. The program is designed for youth who live in or attend school in Charlotte/Mecklenburg County and are curious about careers, leadership, and making a difference in their community. Young people who attend the Academy are expected to be ready to show up, participate fully, and be respectful members of a team. During Envision Academy, participants visit workplaces, hear from community and industry leaders, and practice skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. They reflect on their strengths and interests, explore options for college, training, or employment, and build connections that can link them to future work opportunities.

To be eligible for the Envision Academy, a student must be…

  • 15-18 years of age and enrolled in school
