Fair Housing

"Equal access in housing is a right, not a privilege."

Fair housing ensures everyone lives in welcoming neighborhoods free from discrimination and bias. The Charlotte Fair Housing Ordinance prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status and disability. This vital ordinance protects individuals and families when renting, buying, or financing homes and addresses concerns like appraisal bias.

The community relations team works tirelessly to uphold these protections. Our fair housing team empowers individuals to understand their rights, file complaints and access justice when discrimination occurs. From hosting educational outreach programs to referring cases and working collaboratively with various partners to address issues or disputes, our efforts are rooted in fostering an equitable community.

Building Inclusive Neighborhoods

We understand the importance for residents to choose neighborhoods where they feel comfortable, supported and secure. To achieve this vision, community relations works alongside federal partners like the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Fair Housing Assistance Program. The fair housing team handles complaints that occur within the city of Charlotte and the unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County, ensuring that every resident has access to a fair and impartial resolution process.

Engaging Through Education

Knowledge is power, and our fair housing and nondiscrimination ordinance (NDO) training sessions teach consumers and housing providers inclusivity practices. From understanding the intricacies of the Charlotte Fair Housing Ordinance to bringing awareness to additional ordinances and policies like the NDO and Source of Income Protections, we provide the resources necessary to create equitable housing opportunities for all.

Celebrating Fair Housing Month

Each April, we honor the signing of the Fair Housing Act in 1968 with National Fair Housing Month. This time reminds us of the ongoing journey toward integration and justice in housing. It’s a celebration of progress and a call to action so that every resident of Charlotte-Mecklenburg has the freedom to live where they choose, in neighborhoods of opportunity and promise.
