Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee

Our 45 members are appointed to three-year terms by the Mayor (8 members), Charlotte City Council (16 members) and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (21 members). They act as resident advisors who provide professional staff an insightful gateway to current human relations issues. This unique organizational structure allows City staff to capture a broad community perspective and develop informed and appropriate human relations services.


How does the Committee work?

CRC's diverse membership is divided into six subcommittees: CRC Representative, Public Relations and Community/Cultural Engagement. The subcommittee chairs, along with the CRC chairperson and vice-chairperson, form the CRC Leadership Committee. Recommendations for action or advocacy are made by subcommittee chairs through their participation in the CRC Leadership Committee.

These committee members offer genuine feedback on community matters, deliberate on proposed initiatives, and facilitate communication between the committee, the community, and elected representatives. CRC members also play a vital role in promoting civic engagement, fostering understanding, respect, and goodwill among all residents, facilitating communication among various racial, religious, and ethnic groups in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and cultivating working relationships with special interest groups.

The responsibilities of CRC members now include investigating potentially disruptive community conditions, devising appropriate interventions to prevent violence, collaborating with relevant referral agencies or authorities, fostering community trust in the process for handling complaints of police misconduct, and enhancing relations between the citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officers.
