Traffic Count Database
The Charlotte Department of Transportation utilizes a data management system called MS2 as our traffic count database. This data is used to develop the traffic model for the region, inform capital projects, retime traffic signals, and evaluate intersections for future traffic signals.
Below are two types of traffic counts available in MS2:
48-Hour Mid-Block Counts
48-hour mid-block counts are usually conducted along thoroughfares using counting tubes that are laid across the roadway. When a vehicle drives over each tube, a pulse of air is recorded by the counter. Software is used to analyze the timing and pattern of the pulses to determine the volume, speed, and type of vehicle traveling along the roadway.
13-Hour Turning Movement Counts
13-hour turning movement counts are conducted at intersections throughout the city using computer vision equipment to determine the volume of vehicles going straight through an intersection, and those making left turns and right turns on each leg of the intersection. These counts also collect the number of pedestrians and bicyclists crossings at the intersection.
*The North Carolina Department of Transportation also maintains traffic count database system.

Disclaimer: The volumes shown on MS2 are raw volumes and not adjusted for seasonal or other variations in travel patterns. Users are responsible to be knowledgeable of the character and limitations associated with traffic data if used in engineering work. Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information, errors and conditions originating from physical sources used to develop the corporate database may be reflected in the data supplied. Users of this data must be aware of data conditions and bear responsibility for the appropriate use of the information with respect to possible errors, collection methodology, currency of data, and other conditions specific to certain data.
