CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 24, 2024) – City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services has announced its collection schedule for the summer holidays.

  • Memorial Day: Collection service will occur as scheduled. There will be no delay in garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste service the week of Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 27.
  • Juneteenth: There will be no collection of garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste on Wednesday, June 19. Solid Waste Services will operate on a one-day delay following the holiday, with Friday customers receiving service on Saturday, June 22. It will be an orange recycling collection week.
  • Independence Day: Collection service will occur as scheduled. There will be no delay in garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste service the week of Independence Day, which is Thursday, July 4.
  • Labor Day: Collection service will occur as scheduled. There will be no delay in garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste service the week of Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 2.

Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer, which means residents are firing up the grill and there is an increase in charcoal, lighter fluid and other household hazardous waste. If placed in the regular garbage, hazardous waste can react and start fires in the back of collection trucks, putting residents and workers at risk.

As you enjoy the summer, please ensure you are properly disposing of household hazardous waste using the guidelines below:

  • Charcoal should be fully cooled before placing in the garbage cart. Coals that aren’t fully cooled can cause fires.
  • Read disposal instructions on product labels to reduce the risk of products exploding, igniting, leaking, mixing with other chemicals or posing hazards on the way to the disposal facility.
  • Never mix leftover household hazardous waste with other products as they may ignite or explode.

Alternatively, household hazardous waste can be taken to one of Mecklenburg County’s full-service centers.

Solid Waste Services offers collection updates via text. Residents who wish to receive updates regarding impacts to service can text their collection day to 73224. For example, if their collection day is Thursday, they would text “Thursday” to 73224.
