Amity Springs Storm Drainage Improvement Project

October 24, 2025

• Construction is progressing.
•  The contractor experienced two consecutive failures of the downstream cofferdam, each of which caused flooding in the work area and temporarily halted progress.
•  A new, more robust cofferdam has been successfully installed.
•  Culvert installation activity is expected to resume during the week of October 27–31.

October 3, 2025

• Construction is progressing.
•  To provide a dry working environment, temporary structures (cofferdams) were built upstream and downstream of the existing culverts and a bypass system was installed to redirect water. 
•  Excavation has started in preparation for installation of steel supports called H-beam piles. 
•  The crane has arrived on site, and pile driving operations are scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 6.

September 12, 2025

• The temporary access road connecting Amity Springs Drive and Alrose Drive is now open.
•  On Wednesday, September 10, a portion of Amity Springs Drive (after Iron Gate Lane) was closed for the removal and replacement of the existing culverts.  The closure is anticipated to last for approximately 6 months.
• The temporary access road will remain in place during construction, and it will be removed at the end of the project.
• Driver feedback signs, also known as radar speed signs, have been installed along the detour route. Please follow the posted speed limit.
• To ensure safety of motorists, pedestrians, and crew, please follow all signs.

August 28, 2025

• The temporary access road connecting Amity Springs Drive and Alrose Drive is anticipated to open on Friday, September 5. 
• Starting Monday, September 8, a portion of Amity Springs Drive (after Iron Gate Lane) will be closed for approximately 6 months.
• The temporary access road will remain in place during construction and it will be removed at the end of the project.

August 22, 2025

• Weather Impacts: Recent rain has affected construction progress.
• Speed Cushion Installation: Hux Contracting has completed installation of four speed cushions—two on Amity Place and two on Coronado Drive.
• Temporary Access Road Construction: The contractor expects to finish the temporary access road by the end of the month, weather permitting. The access road will remain closed until Amity Springs Drive is shut down.
• Amity Springs Drive Road Closure: The contractor will provide the required 10-day notice to the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) before closing Amity Springs Drive. Detour signs are already in place but will stay covered until needed. The temporary access road will open shortly before the closure.

August 8, 2025

Storm Water Services’ contractor Hux Contracting will be replacing four speed humps (two on Amity Place and two on Coronado Drive) with new speed cushions.

The work is anticipated to start on Thursday, Aug. 14 and take approximately 3 workdays to complete (weather permitting).  A lane closure, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., will be necessary to complete the following:

• Aug. 14 (Thursday): Mill existing speed humps to a depth just below the existing asphalt grade.
• Aug. 15 (Friday): Resurface milled areas to match existing asphalt grade.
• Aug. 18 (Monday): Install speed cushions.

Please note: If there is a delay due to weather, the start date will shift to Aug. 18.

Construction of the temporary access road continues. This is an active construction site with heavy equipment. To ensure safety, the site is restricted to construction personnel. Please do not access the area until construction of the temporary road has been completed.

July 18, 2025

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is working with Hux Contracting LLC., to construct storm drainage improvements near 5801 Amity Springs Drive. Thank you for your patience.

• Beginning July 21, a temporary road will be built connecting Amity Springs Drive and Alrose Drive to be used during construction. Access to residences will be maintained.
• A portion of Amity Springs Drive after Iron Gate Lane will close when the temporary road is complete for approximately 6 months.
• To ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians and crew, please follow all signs.

The project team is currently coordinating with the construction contractor and a construction schedule will be coming soon.

Where is the project located and what drainage infrastructure improvements will be constructed?

The project is located on Amity Springs Drive. A failing culvert (two 36” metal pipes) located at the entrance of the Glenhaven at Firethorne neighborhood will be removed and replaced with a three sided 8-foot-by-5-foot concrete box culvert approximately 40 feet long.

What are the benefits of this project?

Rainwater from surrounding neighborhoods, including Firethorne and Coventry Woods, drains through this culvert and flows to Campbell Creek and then McAlpine Creek. Replacement of the failing culvert will ensure adequate infrastructure is in place to convey runoff from a drainage area of 90 acres and maintained by Storm Water Services moving forward. This work will also ensure long-term access to the Glenhaven neighborhood.

Why is temporary access needed for residents of Glenhaven?

The Glenhaven neighborhood has one access point which requires residents to drive over the culvert. During removal and construction of the new culvert, residents will need a temporary way to access their homes. 

Will the temporary access be removed?

The temporary access will be removed at the end of the project. Glenhaven residents will return to entering and exiting their neighborhood by driving over the newly constructed culvert on Amity Springs Drive.

Will trees and shrubs be removed?

Temporary access will require removal of some trees and shrubs. Storm Water Services coordinates with a city arborist and a re-planting plan will be implemented at the end of the project. 

Will there be wildlife and stream impacts?

The project is anticipated to have minimal disturbance on the perennial stream and wildlife. There are no endangered species in the area and nearby areas are available for wildlife to relocate. 

How will traffic impacts be minimized?

Signage will direct drivers and traffic calming options include:

• Installing a speed hump near temporary access connection
• Upgrading existing speed humps
• Installing speed limit signs
• Installing dynamic driver feedback signs

Will access be maintained for emergency vehicles and school buses?

Emergency vehicles and Charlotte Mecklenburg School buses will be able to provide services to both Coventry Woods and the Glenhaven neighborhoods.

What is the project timeline?

Storm Water Services anticipates the project will take approximately 6 months to complete.
