Business Matching Grants

The City of Charlotte offers matching grant programs to support commercial property owners and businesses located within designated Business Corridor Revitalization geographies. These programs help improve building appearance, enhance safety, and upgrade interior spaces, contributing to the long-term economic vitality and vibrancy of our city's business corridors. 

Application deadlines: Quarterly on February 15, May 15, August 15, and November 15 

How the Grants Work

Once the application has been received:

  1. Review process: City staff evaluates applications based on location, public benefit, visual and safety improvements, and potential for economic activity.
  2. Grant Agreement: After approval, the city enters into a contract with the applicant outlining the scope of work.
  3. Reimbursement: City reimburses approved costs upon completion, inspection, and submission of paid receipts.
  4. Timeline: Projects must be completed within 24 months of contract signing.

Eligibility

Eligible Geography

Commercial properties and businesses located within the Businesses Corridor Revitalization Geography. Check this virtual map to see if your address is within the eligible geography.

Eligible applicants:

  • Owners or tenants of for-profit commercial buildings. Use of the building must conform to all current codes and ordinances; non-conforming uses of any kind are not allowed.
  • National/regional chains headquartered in Charlotte MSA.
  • Prohibited businesses include but not limited to adult-oriented businesses, gambling including arcades and sweepstakes, smoke and vape shops, new construction projects, businesses operating from residential property.
  • Portions of buildings occupied by ineligible businesses of any kind are ineligible for program funds.
  • Disbursed grants are subject to a clawback provision if space is occupied by a prohibited business.
  • Vacant buildings may qualify if intended to attract eligible businesses. Property must conform to all current codes and ordinances.

Important Notes

  • No reimbursement is provided for work completed before grant approval and contract execution.
  • Applicants are responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and approvals.
  • Businesses using certified MWSBE firms may qualify for a 60% reimbursement rate.

Façade Improvement Grant

The Façade Improvement Grant helps commercial property owners and tenants renovate building exteriors and bring signs, landscaping, and parking into compliance with city code. The goal is to reduce blight and support corridor revitalization.

Maximum grant: $20,000-$90,000 (based on building size)

Eligible improvements:

  • Approved architectural facade renovations
  • Upgrades to signage, parking, and landscaping
  • Infrastructure improvements in the public right-of-way
  • Reimbursement of up to $3,000 for architectural fees (in addition to max grant)

Interior Upfit Improvement Grant

The Interior Upfit Grant supports renovations that enhance the functionality and code compliance of interior spaces. This program is ideal for business owners or property owners investing in major upgrades to activate or expand their space.

Maximum grant: $30,000

Eligible improvements:

  • HVAC, fire suppression, plumbing, electrical
  • Flooring, lighting, wall reconfiguration
  • Interior restrooms and utility upgrades

Security Improvement Grant

The Security Grant helps business and property owners create safer environments for employees and customers by funding physical security upgrades recommended by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. 

Maximum grant: $5,000 for single business; $20,000 for shopping centers with 3+ tenants

Eligible improvements:

  • Security lighting, cameras, fencing, locking devices, windows, alarm systems, ironwork, trees and shrubbery.
  • Based on a CMPD Crime Prevention Officer security analysis.
