Youth Development

We invest in young people as leaders in their schools, neighborhoods, and communities. These initiatives strengthen social-emotional skills, build confidence, and create opportunities for youth voice and leadership at every level—from classroom to citywide engagement.

Peer Clubs and Peer Mediation

Peer Clubs

The peer club program serves students at schools across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Most sessions are hosted at Charlotte-Mecklenburg middle schools, but we also partner with elementary, high, and private schools. Each session is led by a youth programs specialist and meets weekly for 45–60 minutes.

Peer clubs are designed to support personal growth by helping students learn about themselves, manage conflict and challenges, strengthen communication skills, and build meaningful connections with others.

The program equips students with life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Many participants say it has given them tools to create positive change in their schools, homes, and communities.

"I think about what I want to be in my future, and I know that getting into an argument or fight is not going to help me with that. I know I don't want to go the wrong way in life, so I refer to the coping skills and advice that we learned from the group." - Student participant in peer club program

"After being in this program, I handle conflict a lot better because I used to get mad a lot, but I feel like the program has taught me the steps to calm down and walk away from certain situations." - Student participant in peer club program

Peer Mediation

The peer mediation program is for students who want to be trained to serve as mediators in their schools. Once training is complete, students:

  • Help their peers peacefully find solutions to their conflict.
  • Serve as ambassadors who understand how to solve problems without violence.
  • Exemplify fairness and appreciation to others.
  • Understand how to maintain confidentiality, within the approved parameters, of a mediation session.

OYO Ambassadors

OYO Ambassadors are alumni of our internship programs who continue their growth journey by serving as mentors, youth leaders, and program representatives.

They receive additional training in leadership, communication, and public speaking while representing youth perspectives at City events and with community partners. Past activities have included speaking at events, volunteering together, hard and soft skill development workshops, discussions and panels with national education leaders, and more.

Applications to participate in this program open each year in early fall.

Civic Engagement Initiatives

The Office of Youth Opportunities provides students the chance to get involved in their communities. Whether volunteering, participating on the youth council, or engaging in a summit, students learn communication techniques and how they can take ownership in their communities.

Generation Nation: Charlotte Mecklenburg Youth Council

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council (CMYC) is the official student advisory council for city of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The program is managed in partnership with GenerationNation, a Charlotte-based nonprofit with strong experience in K-12 education and youth civic leadership. CMYC further positions Charlotte as an innovative, inclusive, inspiring, and welcoming city that is focused on the future.

Through the CMYC partnership, diverse Charlotte youth:

  • Positively interact with and advise community leaders;
  • Gain understanding about the city’s successes, challenges, and opportunities for civic problem-solving in the City and across local governments and organizations;
  • Join a growing network of young civic leaders who are working to make Charlotte a safe, family-oriented city where people work together to help everyone thrive.

Students can join any time during the year.
