The City of Charlotte and Charlotte Fire will host a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction for the new firehouse serving the River District.

Project Overview

The River District Firehouse (Firehouse 44) will be an integral asset to support Charlotte Fire Department's efficient response to emergencies in the community, providing a location in the easter side of Dixie River Road in the newly developed River District community and expanding its response area in this newly incorporated region of Charlotte.

This new two-story, three-bay, approximately 14,000-square-foot firehouse will be the first mass timber firehouse in the Southeast and will meet Living Future's Zero-Carbon certification for total project embodied carbon. This location meets the City of Charlotte Policy for Sustainable City Facilities and Charlotte Fire Department Facilities Master Plan and will fully support the sophisticated and time-sensitive operations of the Fire Department.

Temporary Firehouse

A temporary firehouse is needed to manage response times and provide continuity of service to the community as the new firehouse is designed and built. This facility is located on Dixie River Road near the future Catawba Crossing. A triple-wide trailer houses the firefighters and a pre-engineered building serves as an apparatus bay for the fire engine and emergency equipment. Construction was completed in early 2026.

Project Goals

To provide the surrounding community with a modern facility that accommodates a fire team, rescue team and houses state-of-the-art equipment.

Public Involvement

The project team hosted a virtual public meeting on March 28, 2023 to share information about the project and next steps. View the recording. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Sept. 10, 2026 to mark the start of construction on the permanent firehouse.
