What is the Placemaking Hub?

The purpose of this Charlotte Placemaking Hub or Guidebook is to empower residents to design, install, and maintain their own, community-driven placemaking projects. Imagine your street, your downtown business district, or even your entire neighborhood as a canvas that can be transformed to inspire others and connect friends and neighbors.

The tools outlined below can help improve the public spaces in your neighborhood. Think of these tools as a menu of possibilities to make your favorite place more attractive by creating a unique vibe on a street, add art to a street, or celebrate the history of your neighborhood!

The tools are grouped into two categories: Creating Place and Supporting Art. The approval process for each group is similar except for the required Right-of-Way use agreement based on the project type.

This online resource center can be instrumental to anyone interested in the Placemaking Grant Program or the Creative Pool. It has all the tools necessary to learn how to improve your community and can help outline steps to bring a dream project to life even without outside funding.

Introducing the new and improved Placemaking Hub!

The City of Charlotte’s Placemaking Hub is your resource center for bringing a project to life in your

neighborhood.

To simplify the process, tools are grouped into two categories: Creating Place and Supporting Art.

Creating Place has tools for projects that create new public spaces or that activate existing spaces.

Are you a CATS rider who dreams of decorating a bus stop? Or maybe a restaurant owner who envisions

expanding into sidewalk dining?

Learn how you can bring these elements to your community through the Placemaking Hub.

Supporting Art has tools for projects like artwork, sculptures, and wayfinding.

From wall and street murals to decorative utility cabinet wraps and signage, there are tools available to

help you make unique additions to your neighborhood.

You can check out past projects around Charlotte on an interactive dashboard. One day soon, you could

find your own project on the map!

If you have a vision already, you can apply for a permit through an online application form.

The city strives to make the process as easy as possible, and we’re prepared to answer all of your

questions. Find frequently asked questions online and direct any additional questions to

placemaking@charlottenc.gov.

A key feature of the updated Placemaking Hub is an in-depth guidebook to walk you through every step

of your journey to reimagining where you live.

The Queen City is a canvas, and the Placemaking Hub empowers you to make that canvas your own.
