Bus Stop Improvement Program

CATS is working to improve bus stops across our system by including more accessible boarding areas, seating, shelters, lighting and other amenities. This initiative ties into recommendations from the Better Bus program which has a goal of improving over 2,000 bus stops over the next 10 years.

Use the map below to explore our progress in making CATS stops more accessible.

FAQs

What is the Bus Stop Improvement Program?

The Bus Stop Improvement program is an initiative to enhance accessibility at all bus stops within the CATS network. It ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), prioritizing stops based on guidelines from the CATS MTC-06 Transit Services Guidelines policy.

How does CATS determine which stops get amenities?

Improvement types for bus stops are determined using a scoring system detailed in the CATS MTC-06 policy. Improvement types are determined based on the following criteria:

  • Ridership (daily boardings)

  • Wait Time (stops with longer bus wait times score higher)

  • Equity (serving predominantly minority or low-income areas)

  • Proximity to activity generators like medical facilities or schools

How long does it take to build or improve a bus stop?

The timeline for constructing a bus stop depends on the improvement type. Bus stops located within public right-of-way (ROW) and along an existing sidewalk are easier to construct and typically take about 1-2 years for survey, design, permitting, and construction. CATS is currently working on solutions to expedite this timeline.

How can I provide feedback or request improvements at a stop?

Customers can submit requests for bus stop improvements through the CATS Customer Service team by calling 704-336-7433 or emailing telltransit@charlottenc.gov.

Adopt-a-Stop Program

The Adopt-A-Stop program is an initiative where individuals or groups of volunteers agree to pick up litter at CATS bus stops at least once a month over a two-year period. Adopt-A-Stop is free to participate in and available to all Charlotte residents, community organizations and businesses interested in donating their time to keep Charlotte litter-free. Volunteers receive all needed supplies to assist with their cleanup efforts. After three months of consistent cleanings logged, a placard will be mounted to the bus stop signpost to recognize the volunteers’ efforts.
