Fare Modernization Program

CATS is planning fare system improvement to Modernize, Simplify, and Grow Ridership while staying true to our commitment to making fare payment clear, convenient and easy to use ensuring a positive transit experience for every customer.

These improvements are intended to make it easier for customers to pay by using familiar methods such as mobile devices and contactless cards while enabling electronic fare validation across the entire system.

The three pillars of importance for this fare modernization. Detailed description below

From left to right and top to bottom, modernize will introduce new ways to pay and reduce use of cash. Simplify a fare structure and transfers, as well as increase consistency in fare payment. Lastly, grow ridership to incentivize transit use and expand pass program options.

Why This Program Started and What Has Been Done

About 18 months ago, CATS launched the Fare Modernization Program with a comprehensive review of the existing fare structure and policies. This study identified opportunities to improve how customers pay for transit, ensuring the system continues to meet community needs as it grows.

What’s Happening Now

CATS is engaging the community to inform, educate, and gather feedback that will help shape improvements to meet local needs. To ensure broad participation, CATS will host several public meetings and will share dates, times and locations once they are finalized.

Upcoming Public Meetings

CATS will host one virtual public meeting and five in-person public meetings. Stay tuned! CATS will update this page once the meeting details are finalized, and notices will be posted on social media and our CATS-Pass app.
