The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is opening a new pedestrian rail crossing located in South End Monday, Aug. 31. The crossing is part of ongoing infrastructure investments to improve Charlotte's transit system by enhancing safety, accessibility and connectivity for residents, employees and visitors.

Together with the addition of a new light rail station set to open in 2028, these improvements will make it easier for people to access transit, connect to nearby neighborhoods and businesses and support the continued growth and vitality of the South End community.

“The new station and pedestrian crossing represent an important investment in Charlotte's transportation network, improving access to public transit while creating safer, more convenient connections for people walking, biking and using transit,” CATS Interim CEO Brent Cagle said. “These enhancements support CATS' commitment to providing a reliable, accessible and sustainable transportation system that meets the needs of a growing community.”

While the crossing is open for use, construction activity will continue in the surrounding area. Pedestrians are encouraged to use caution and follow all posted safety instructions while crews complete the remaining work.

To help ensure everyone's safety, pedestrians should:

  • Stay within the marked crosswalk at all times.

  • Do not walk on the gravel or track area outside the designated crossing.

  • Follow all posted signs and instructions from construction personnel.

  • Stop, look both ways and confirm the tracks are clear before crossing.

  • Listen for approaching trains. Trains will sound their bells as they approach the crossing.

CATS appreciates the public's patience and cooperation as work in the area is completed. By following these safety reminders, pedestrians can help ensure a safe crossing for themselves and others.
