CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is entering the next phase of system upgrades along the Blue Line, which will require scheduled single-tracking periods and Rail Trail detours near the new pedestrian crosswalk by Publix through early December.
These improvements support construction of the new station in South End and essential maintenance that strengthens long-term reliability and keep the Queen City moving forward.
As work begins south of Uptown, Blue Line trains will continue operating with adjusted frequencies. During single-tracking operations, Blue Line customers should expect additional travel time at peak and midday hours. All trains will share one track through work zones and directional signage will guide customers to the correct boarding platforms at impacted stations.
Single-Tracking Schedule:
-
Nov. 2 – 6, Nov. 9 – 13: Board all trains on southbound (toward I-485/South Blvd Station) platforms between New Bern and Bland stations
-
Nov. 14 – 15: Board all trains on northbound (toward Uptown/UNC Charlotte Main Station) platforms between Archdale and Scaleybark stations
-
Nov. 30 – Dec. 4, Dec. 7 – 11: Board all trains on northbound (toward Uptown/UNC Charlotte Main Station) platforms between New Bern and Bland stations
CATS will also implement temporary detours along portions of the Rail Trail adjacent to the construction zone. Signage and barriers will direct pedestrians and cyclists to the designated alternate path.
Rail Trail Closure Schedule:
-
Nov. 2 – 6, Nov. 9 – 13: Rail Trail will be closed on northbound track side between the new pedestrian rail crossing and South End Cannon Pharmacy (2334 South Blvd.)
-
Nov. 30 – Dec. 4, Dec. 7 – 11: Rail Trail will be closed on southbound track side between the new pedestrian rail crossing and JETSET Pilates (2161 Hawkins St.)
“These investments keep the Queen City moving forward by improving safety, expanding access and strengthening the reliability of our system,” said Brent Cagle, interim CEO of CATS. “We appreciate our riders’ patience as we complete this important work.”
Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time when possible and check the CATS-Pass app or the CATS website for updated train information. CATS' Rider's Alerts will provide ongoing updates throughout the project.
