Under the PAVE Act, effective July 1st, 2026, the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC), and its advisory board, the Public Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC), have been dissolved as public bodies. Read more about the PAVE Act by selecting this link: PAVE Act.

Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA)

The newly established Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA) is charged with expanding and modernizing the region's transit infrastructure, improving connectivity, and increasing mobility options for residents and visitors across Mecklenburg County. The MPTA will be responsible for implementing the approved CATS 2055 Transit System Plan, including bus, rail, and Microtransit expansion and enhancements. The authority will be led by a 27-member board that includes representatives from across the county. The board's diverse makeup ensures that a wide range of perspectives, from transit riders and small business owners to experts in law, finance, engineering, and urban planning, are integral to shaping the future of transit in the region.

Public Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC)

Effective July 1st, the MPTA established an interim Public Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC) through December 31, 2026. During this time, the MPTA will develop a plan for a permanent advisory committee that includes feedback from current PTAC members. The MPTA’s Operations and Safety Committee will review the current PTAC structure, provide a review of best practices for citizen advisory committees, answer MPTA Board member questions and get feedback to start to develop structure including makeup, appointing process, and charter for new advisory committee. New appointments will take place in the fall with new terms beginning January 2027. Read more about PTAC’s transition plans and timeline by selecting this link: MPTA Resolution
