Board and Committee

Applications are now being accepted for the Transit Authority Board of Trustees following the passage of the Projects for Advancing Vehicle-Infrastructure Enhancements (P.A.V.E.) Act. The legislation, signed into law by Governor Josh Stein on July 1, authorizes the creation of the Transit Authority to advance mobility, strengthen regional growth and improve the public transit system throughout Mecklenburg County.

The creation of the authority is contingent upon voter approval of the one-cent sales tax referendum on the November 2025 ballot. If voters approve the referendum, the Transit Authority will be established to finance, provide, operate and maintain a safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally-sound transit system for the region.

The application period for the City of Charlotte will be open through Monday, October 13, 2025.

There are two groups that support and provide guidance to CATS.  The Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) is the policy board for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and has responsibility for reviewing and recommending all long-range public transportation plans. The MTC is provided public input and guidance by The Public Transit Advisory Committee (PTAC), which was established by the MTC effective January 1, 2025, through an interlocal agreement between the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the six towns. PTAC replaces the Citizens Transit Advisory Group (CTAG) and the Transit Services Advisory Committee (TSAC). Those two  public bodies helped shape the direction of public transit in the region and will continue to do so as the PTAC.
