Fatal Crash Investigation in the Westover Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle collision that occurred in the 1200 block of Clanton Road in the Westover Division.

On Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, at approximately 3:14 p.m., Westover Division officers responded to an accident with personal injury call for service near the 1200 block of Clanton Road. Upon arriving, officers located an unresponsive female laying in the roadway.

A 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a trailer was stopped in the roadway near the victim. The driver, Floyd Tyrone Bankhead, 54, remained on scene. The pedestrian, Meta Howze King, 65, was transported to the hospital by MEDIC where she was pronounced deceased.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. 

Mr. Bankhead was screened for impairment and determined not to be impaired.

Impairment is not suspected of Ms. King, but toxicology results are pending. Contributing circumstances for this vehicle collision is currently under investigation.

Ms. King’s next of kin has been notified of her death.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
