Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, June 22, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred in the North Division.
On July 18, 2025, at approximately 9:01 p.m., Officers with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department's North Division, Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) and MEDIC responded to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the 2300 block of West Sugar Creek Road.
Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian lying in the roadway with serious injuries. Witnesses on scene stated that the pedestrian was struck by a silver SUV that had fled the scene. MEDIC arrived and transported the pedestrian, identified as Frank Leon Dent, 64, to the hospital with serious injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit were notified on May 28, 2026, that the victim was pronounced deceased due to injuries he sustained in this collision.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was crossing the street outside of the marked crosswalk when he was struck. The vehicle that struck the victim failed to remain on scene or notify law enforcement.
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
