Suspect Charged in Crimes Against Children Cold Case Investigation

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, October 26, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit have identified and charged a suspect for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in 2014. The suspect was 24-years-old at the time of the abuse.

 

On Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at approximately 11:32 p.m., Eastway Division officers responded to a sexual assault call for service in the 3200 block of Shamrock Drive.  Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile victim who stated she had been sexually assaulted by an adult male suspect.  The victim was taken to a local hospital where a sexual assault kit was collected.

 

As of a result of the continued and dedicated work by detectives with the CMPD’s Cold Case Unit, Travon Levi Woods (DOB: 08/04/1990) was identified as the suspect in this case through DNA association in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) in 2016.  At the time, Mr. Woods was incarcerated on unrelated charges at the Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, NC. 

 

Upon release from prison on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, Mr. Woods was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office where he was served with warrants in connection to the juvenile sexual assault cold case investigation.  He has been charged with the following:

  • Statutory Rape
  • Statutory Sex Offense (2 counts)
  • Indecent Liberties with a minor (4 counts)

 

The victim in this case has been notified of the arrest.
