SWAT Team Responds to Barricaded Suspect in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, August 30, 2023) – The suspect in this case has been identified as Jeremy Keith Asbury (DOB 12/21/1991). On Tuesday, August 29, Mr. Asbury died at the hospital from his injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mr. Asbury’s next of kin was notified of his death.

 

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, August 29, 2023) – Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team responded to an armed, barricaded suspect today in the 3000 block of Columbus Circle in the Metro Division. The suspect was wanted for charges in a felony sexual assault case. He was transported to the hospital by MEDIC after a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a six-hour standoff with officers.

 

Shortly before 8 a.m., detectives attempted to contact a suspect in a sexual assault case with the incident report number: 20230828-1222-00. Upon the detectives’ arrival at the suspect’s home, the armed suspect barricaded himself inside. Detectives and Metro patrol officers tried to speak to the suspect for an extended period before officers requested the assistance of CMPD’s SWAT team. CMPD’s Sexual Assault Unit detectives obtained arrest warrants for the suspect for multiple felony charges related to a violent sex assault incident.  Officers also coordinated with the suspect’s family and an outside community agency to attempt to contact the suspect and peacefully resolve the situation. Attempts to communicate with the suspect and facilitate a peaceful surrender were unsuccessful.

 

Shortly after 2 p.m., officers heard a gunshot inside the residence and made entry along with MEDIC. The suspect was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound with a firearm present. There were no other subjects inside the residence. The suspect was transported from the scene by MEDIC to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

 

Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from the Community Policing Crisis Response Team (CPCRT) and Charlotte Fire also responded.
