Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Independence Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, October 14, 2023) – As a result of this continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit have identified Jakkael Best (04/20/1997) as a suspect in this case and obtained warrants for his arrest.

 

On Saturday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested Jakkael Best and transported Mr. Best to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) to be interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Mr. Best was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg Count Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:

 

  • 1st Degree Murder
  • Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon

 

The family of the victim has been notified of the arrest.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, October 11, 2023) – The victim in this case has been identified as Simon Yemane Semere (DOB: 05/20/1989).  The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, October 11, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 6600 block of Wenda Place in the Independence Division.

 

On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, shortly before 5:00 a.m., Independence Division officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service in the 6600 block of Wenda Place. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Investigations responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.
