Homicide Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C.(Friday, July 28, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the Hickory Grove Division.

 

On Thursday, July 27, 2023, at approximately 2:18 a.m., officers received a call about a gunshot victim arriving at a hospital in Cabarrus County with the shooting scene originating in the 8400 block of Hood Road in Charlotte. Hickory Grove Division detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. The victim of the shooting, Koreon Medina (DOB: 11/30/1996), was pronounced deceased due to his injuries.  CMPD’s Homicide Unit then took over the investigation.

 

As a result of the investigation, Homicide Unit detectives identified and obtained warrants for the arrest of a 17-year-old juvenile suspect in connection to this case. 

 

On Friday, July 28, 2023, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested the juvenile suspect.  The suspect was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (601 E. Trade Street) and was interviewed by detectives. The suspect was then transported to the Cabarrus County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with the following:

 

  • Murder
  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill

 

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
