Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Freedom Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, July 18, 2023) The victim in this case has been identified as Tyra Crosby (DOB: 08/28/1997).  

 

Upon arrival of the call for service, officers located the suspect, Stephanie Alexander (DOB: 11/10/1971), on scene.  Ms. Alexander was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown to speak with homicide detectives.  At the conclusion of the interview, Ms. Alexander was charged with Voluntary Manslaughter and transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Ms. Crosby’s family has been notified of her death and the suspect’s arrest.

 

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, July 18, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 500 block of Porter Street in the Freedom Division.

 

On Tuesday, July 18, at approximately 5:21 a.m., officers responded to a 911 caller stating she had arrived home and shot an unknown female subject inside of her house in the 500 block of Porter Street.  Upon arrival, officers located a female victim with an apparent gunshot wound.  MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

 

The 911 caller remained on scene and is currently being interviewed by detectives.  At this time, all parties involved have been identified and there is no outstanding suspect or danger to the public. 

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, and MEDIC also assisted.

 

Any charges in this case will be determined by the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office.
