Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, May 30, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Westover Division.

On Monday, May 29, 2023, at approximately 11:58 p.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of Tyvola Rd in reference to a motor vehicle crash call for service. Upon arrival, officers located a 2007 BMW X5 off the roadway and overturned. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the driver, Mr. Kendall Crawford (DOB: 01/14/1987), deceased due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that the BMW was traveling east on Tyvola Rd at a high rate of speed, when the driver lost control, ran off the left side of the road, and overturned.  Mr. Crawford was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Excessive speed appears to be a factor in this collision.  Toxicology results are pending to determine if impairment is also a factor.
