Published on September 14, 2023

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, September 14, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle in the Steele Creek Division.

On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at approximately 8:13 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 14300 block of Carowinds Boulevard.  Upon arrival, officers located a 1998 Honda Accord with heavy driver’s side damage and a 2007 Harley Davidson badly damaged in the roadway. MEDIC responded to the scene and transported the motorcycle operator to Atrium Health Main with life threatening injuries. The operator of the motorcycle, Jean Kelly Allen Jr. (DOB: 12/16/1973), was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, CMPD Motor Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.  The preliminary investigation indicates the motorcycle was traveling northwest on Carowinds Boulevard when it collided with the Honda as it turned onto Carowinds Blvd.  Mr. Allen struck the driver’s side of the Honda and was separated from the motorcycle.  The driver of the Honda, Angel McDuffie (DOB: 06/18/1998), sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated at Atrium Health Steele Creek.

Impairment and speed appear to be possible factors in this crash for the operator of the motorcycle.  Toxicology results are pending.  It also did not appear that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Mr. Allen’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
