Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, May 30, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Division.
On Monday, May 29, 2023, at approximately 9:33 p.m., officers responded to the 3900 block of Sunset Road in reference to a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a Honda Accord and a Dodge Ram in the roadway, both with heavy front end damage. Charlotte Fire Department and Medic responded to the scene. Medic pronounced the driver of the Honda deceased on scene. The driver and front passenger of the Dodge were transported to Atrium Health Main with non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the Honda was traveling southeast on Sunset Road when it traveled left of center, crossed the center lines and collided head-on with the Dodge Ram. The driver of the Honda has been identified as Ms. Whitney Kiera Johnson (DOB: 01/25/1990). She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Ms. Johnson’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
The driver of the Dodge, Mr. Donta Antonio McNeal (DOB: 09/21/1994) was screened for impairment at the hospital, and was found not to be impaired. Impairment is suspected for Ms. Johnson.
